Product review: The Silicone Beauty Blender

The original Beauty Blender is the number-one purchased tool at Sephora, and yet it has an ideal 90-day shelf life according to the company website. If you’re loyal to the Beauty Blender, that’s $80 of income each year FOR SPONGES. Let that sink in. It’s less wasteful than buying cosmetic sponge wedges in bulk at your local drug store, but no less costly. And let’s be real, there are more important things in life. Like puppies.

I abandoned sponge blending after high school and was perfectly content with my clean finger blending method. Then one day, the Silisponge popped up on my Facebook feed (where else?).

Hype products pull in beauty bloggers like Disney movies pull in children.

The Silisponge is the Chinese cousin to the American Beauty Blender. Despite all that the name implies, this product is not a sponge. It’s more like an insert I would slip in the back of a pair of heels, or something a plastic surgeon might use in a boob job. It’s small, washable and has no shelf life. Retail price is $12 plus shipping. The question is: Does it work?

The short answer? No. But, Molly Cosmetics does not lie to you on this matter. Their product description reads, “Spreading product with it will take some getting used to; final blending can always be finished with oval brush or usual sponge (for example the Beauty Blender), that means washing the oval brush or the sponge will be minimized and they will last a whole lot longer.” (Not true, by the way. It’s not about the number of times you wash it, it’s about the bacteria you are absorbing with each use).

The best thing I can say about this product is that it will not absorb your makeup; it physically can’t. Which means, whatever you apply onto the sponge is going on your face, and it’s easy to over-apply. The worst thing I can say is that instead of improving my makeup routine, it over complicated it with extra steps.

A quality liquid makeup brush that’s well-kept, cleaned and stored will serve you better than any sponge on the market. Invest in a good one and save your money for a better cause. Like adopting a puppy.
