All my life I’ve waited for the American fashion elite to make tiaras publicly acceptable. Now, not only do I consider tiaras acceptable in every day life, I also apply this logic to halos and papal headdresses. The 2018 theme for the first Monday in May, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” (or as I like to call it, “name that religious figure or artifact”) is far more straightforward than the themes of Met Balls passed. Some left little to the imagination, and some missed the mark by a mile: The Gucci crew (which includes Jared Leto and Lana Del Rey) came as the father, son and Mother Mary, Lena Waithe came as a flag, Katy Perry wore angel wings, Evan Rachel Wood came dressed as wings, Ariana Grande wore the Sistine Chapel, Selena Gomez wore essentially the same look she wore last year (while I did appreciate and admire the added bible verses), the Kardashians might as well have been wearing paper bags, Blake Lively ordered a party bus for her Versace mega masterpiece, and Rihanna unseated the pope. After experiencing Taylor Swift’s new dark look, I couldn’t help but reflect on all the ways I could turn her more signature style in to a hilarious Halloween costume. This look is a reflection of her 1989 era. But before we get own to basics, here’s just a bit of fun. Enjoy!
With 60 meters of red carpet to cover over two weeks, the Festival de Cannes is a diamond-studded showcase like no other. It’s one of my favorite annual events to stalk, right up there next to the Met Gala and the Oscars. Founded in 1946 and currently in its 70th season, the film festival is held each year at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres.
Being constantly engaged online is like munching from the party snack bowl. You can’t seem to stop and no one will put it away. Step away from the Cheez-its! They are dangerous and so is your constant online activity. (Dear Lord, I sound like my mother.)
This post is for my own guilty pleasure. My favorite fairytale drama, which first aired 2011, is mid season six, with its seventh season yet to be confirmed. A steady slip in ratings post season three, likely attributing to unfinished arcs, inconsistent character motives and an odd, seemingly necessary death near the end of season five leave audiences fearful that the show’s end will parallel that of “Lost” (show bosses Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis’s last project, renowned for its anticlimactic and disappointing end). I have a thing for themes—events, birthdays, dinner parties, holidays, etc. But, themes are only fun if everyone sticks to them. No one wants to be the only person in costume at a Halloween party. The same goes for the Met Gala, or Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Held on May 2 in New York City and co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and Apple’s Chief Design Officer Jonathan Ive, was themed, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”
When the cameras started flashing on the first Monday in May, a couture silver robot army charged the red carpet, and we were all a little confused. Fashion and celebrity culture fanatics around the world quickly realized either no one knew what Manus or Machina meant, or no one cared to dress in theme. I saw parts of Madonna I never wanted to see. Taylor Swift looked like Jenny Humphrey at prom. The event was one giant missed opportunity. I for one, expected more from Lady Gaga.
