I knew from day one of drafting my novel that my heroine needed an animal companion. So I gave her Ash, a loyal and cheeky dapple grey stallion too clever for his own good. But I knew if I wanted to make him real, I’d have to get some real world experience. Enter Koda, my stallion for the day. We could call this a research trip, but let’s be honest, it was just for me. Who knew learning to canter and trot could be so hard? My ass is hella sore, but what a way to spend a birthday. 🐴 Thanks @zachlaidley for always making this day special.

Of course I finally make my pilgrimage to Forks, Washington on the one day in April when it’s 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Where’s the moody vampire weather when you need it? Regardless, the visit was magical. Blasting Muse, I drove in from the north and made my way to the visitor center where I met the nicest ladies on the planet. They gave me a map of all the best places to go and some tips to find the lesser known spots. I watched the sunset over Rialto Beach (which shares a shore with La Push), crossed the “treaty line,” hiked the coast, camped along the Quillayute River, and drove all over town snapping pictures like the fangirl I am. I was pleasantly surprised to learn how much the town of Forks loves the franchise that put it on the map. If you’ve only ever watched the movies, you’ll have a good time visiting, but if you’ve read the books, it will be an utter delight. I felt like I was 16 again pouring over the tattered pages of my Twilight paperback under my desk in math class.

The past eight months haven’t exactly been a stroll in the park for me. There were days when I was able to escape into my writing and there were days when it was hard for me to work up the motivation to do anything at all. The word anxiety took on a whole new meaning. I learned what a panic attack was and what it can do in conjunction with chronic migraine. The days got shorter, exhaustion swept in faster, and I couldn’t understand why I suddenly felt like I had no time anymore.

This duology has everything I love in a YA novel. Action for days, found family, spectacular world-building, twists and double-crosses, characters so real and raw that they leap off the page, romance that doesn’t overwhelm the plot, a heroine who takes no shit, and covers so stunning you’ll want to put them on display.
